Today in Twee

Writer L. Frank Baum died on this day in 1919 at age 62. The 1939 adaptation of his 1900 fantasy book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz became a major Twee touchstone, especially after it began to screen regularly in the early days of television. It’s pretty much in our DNA at this point. Just yesterday I started spontaneously singing “Munchkin Land.”

Happy 54th birthday to Mr. John Flansburgh of They Might Be Giants. I interviewed John F. (as opposed to John L.) for VF Daily a fews years back and was lucky enough to do it again for the Twee book. To many, his band are much more important than they sometimes get credit for and I am one of those many and say so in the upcoming tome. FUN FACT: If you synch up The Wizard of Oz to TMBG’s Flood album and watch at the same time… fuck all happens.
